Analysis of Urban Metabolism Cycles for a Sustainable and Competitive Tourist City. The Case of Miramar (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Miramar, as a sun and beach tourist destination, has been generating alternatives for tourism renewal aimed at sustainable development. A study of the consumption of resources and the production of waste is displayed with the objective of analyzing the urban metabolism cycles in this city and the viability to be sustainable and competitive tourist city. The proposed strategy was based on the metabolic cycles of the urban system: air, water, waste and energy. The result point out that Miramar has a lack of efficiency in ensuring the closure of the material cycles. Although some positive aspects are evidenced by the incorporation of sustainability criteria in management. Political initiatives to improve the metabolic cycles do not materialize in practice and this reduces the viability of configuring Miramar as a sustainable destination in the short term. However, the implementation of projects on the agenda would improve the situation in the future.
